Pancho's Lament
Pancho's Lament is the alter-ego of New York based songwriter/producer Jeff Cohen. Founded originally to play concerts on his birthday in the mid 90's and in late 1999/early 2000 released a collection of songs which became known as the "Pancho's Lament" cd featuring the multi-talented and wise Pete DeMeo. The second Pancho's Lament album, titled "Leaving Town Alive", was released in limited pressing in early 2003 and the final version officially released in February of 2004. The third "yet-to-be-titled" Pancho's Lament cd will released in August/September 2005.
As a songwriter, Jeff co-wrote the top 5 hit "Crazy For This Girl" for Evan and Jaron" (Sony/Columbia), the top 15 country hit "Holy Water" for Big and Rich (Warner Nashville) which also shot to # 1 on the CMT and GAC video charts plus songs by Ronan Tynan (Universal/Decca), Teitur (Universal - 5 songs on debut album), Spin Doctors (2 songs on the upcoming summer release), Nick Lachey, Chris Barron, the multi-platinum Spanish artist Luz Casal (EMI), multi-platinum Australian artist Christine Anu (Mushroom) and multi-platinum German artist Harmut Engler (EMI) to name a few. Songs have also appeared on many compilations including "Dawson's Creek" Vol #2", "Now 6", and "Kidz Bop".
Jeff's first break arrived when the Pancho's Lament song "Truth About Romeo" became the theme for the WB Network show "Jack and Jill". Luckily, the good people involved with the show went on to use many Pancho's Lament songs which led to more being featured on shows such as "Dawson's Creek", "Party of Five", "Ed", "Roswell", "Reba", "Smallville", "Who Wants To Marry My Dad", "Once and Again" and others. Looking forward to spring 2005 watch out for Pancho's Lament singing the theme for "I Married a Princess" on Lifetime Network also written by Jeff ... this time with his frequent collaborators Michael Hunter Ochs and Arne Hovda.
Jeff has also been fortunate to have some of his songs appear in major and independent films. This summer, Alana Grace's recording of "Black Roses Red" is featured in the hit movie "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and on the soundtrack. Mandy Moore recorded "Top of the World" which was featured in the film "Stuart Little 2". The song was also on the soundtrack album. In 2001, Jonathan Pryce and Kathy Bates sang "Beneath a Blanket of Stars" in the PJ Hogan/New Line film "Unconditional Love". In 2000, director/writer Neil Turitz featured two Pancho's Lament songs "Save" and "Truth about Romeo" in his critically acclaimed movie "Two Ninas" starring Amanda Peet and Ron Livingston. His song "One and Only" performed by Teitur was featured 3 times in the summer hit movie "My Super Ex-girlfriend."
Pancho's Lament has shared stages and opened for artists such as Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco, Kara DioGuardi, Lamont Dozier, Lisa Loeb, Jesse Harris, Hugh Prestwood, Frank Myers and Chris Barron.
In his past career life, Jeff was an executive at the music performing rights society BMI.
